Spouses Luis Valencia and Ana María López moved from El Salvador to the United States in 2005. A few months later they established Golden Sun, a landscape contractor business. Ana is an architect and Luis an agronomist, having studied cultivation of land, soil managment, and crop production. The pair drew on past experiences as businesses owners in El Salvador to establish and grow their new company in the Tampa area.
Golden Sun serves both commercial and residential clients. Their services include landscaping design, maintanance, tree trimming, irrigation, mulching and more. Luis and Ana understand the importance of customer service for the success of a bussiness and they pride themselves on their clients satisfaction with the work they do. According to Luis, “Establishing relationships instead of just doing business transactions makes the difference in this industry because clients remain loyal to you.”
HBIF helped Luis and Ana identify marketing techniques and develop a business plan, which has helped them establish operational and sales goals. They have grown their staff to six full-time employees and additional subcontracted labor. Since 2010 they have nearly tripled their revenues and they now serve Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Luis and Ana plan to continue expanding and diversifying their client base, growing the territory they serve, and even become a supplier for other landscapers. Wise advice they offer fellow entrepreneurs: “Do your homework and research as much as possible before making the first move. Having a plan is vital and sales training is a must.”
